On Friday, Deputy Chief Loren Pogue from the Community Safety Command addressed the public regarding the large-scale demonstrations expected to take place during the upcoming weekend in Toronto.
According to Pogue, the Toronto Police Service will ensure that these demonstrations are conducted lawfully while also aggressively pursuing any alleged or suspected cases of hate crime or violence in the city. Officers from the dedicated hate crime unit will be deployed on the ground to gather evidence and investigate any suspected hate crimes, hate speech or signage.
“Anyone whose behavior crosses the line from lawful demonstration to criminality can expect to be arrested in addition to a visible front-line officer presence,” said Deputy Chief Pogue, adding that the public is encouraged to report any allegations of these crimes to the police for further investigation.
Pogue also provided an update on hate crime incidents between Oct. 7 and the end of last week, highlighting how they have risen in comparison to numbers of the same period last year.
