Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral procession for senior commander Khaled Mansour of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group on Sunday, along with five other Palestinian civilians who were killed during Israeli strikes on Gaza on Saturday.

Mourners took to the streets of Gaza, holding Palestinian flags and chanting for revenge as the cross-border fire continued between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s militant group for the third day.

Gaza officials have said at least 41 Palestinians, almost half of them civilians and including children, had so far been killed. The rockets have paralyzed much of southern Israel and sent residents in cities including Tel Aviv and Ashkelon to shelters.

“It was horrifying,” one resident of Gaza said while a spokesperson for the Israeli army said that “our goal is to provide peace to the residents of Israel.”

According to a member of Islamic Jihad and Egypt’s mediation team, Israel and Palestinian militants have agreed to a Cairo-mediated truce to take effect late on Sunday, raising hopes of an end to the most serious flare-up on the Gaza frontier in more than a year.
