UK prime minister Boris Johnson's authority to fight his country's record coronavirus infections has just suffered a serious blow. His Conservative Party suffered a crushing defeat in a central England by-election. The smaller Liberal Democrat party won the seat that had been held by the conservatives - with a huge majority - for two centuries. The defeat is being seen as a protest vote against Johnson's handling of coronavirus restrictions as well as allegations that members of his government did not respect their own rules. The UK, which had largely dropped rules and restrictions, is debating the best way forward as the Omicron variant looks to take over.
