A mosque and its 300-year-old minaret have been demolished in Iraq's southern city of Basra, to allow a road to be expanded.
Local people say the destruction of the Siraji minaret and its mosque is an erosion of Iraq's heritage.
Antiquities officials say they did not permit the demolition and the minaret should have been preserved. Basra's governor defended the move and blamed the antiquities authorities for failing to relocate the mosque last year.
Heritage conservationists fear more sites will be destroyed.
Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed reports from Basra, Iraq.
