Iran protests: Canada to waive fees, "simplify" process for Iranians to stay in Canada | FULL

Canada's Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced on Thursday that the federal government was introducing special temporary measures for Iranians in Canada who may wish to extend their stay as unrest continues in Iran following the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini and subsequent arrests.

Wilkinson, speaking on behalf of Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, said this would include waiving certain fees and "simplifying" the process for Iranians who wish to extend their temporary stay. He said it would also simplify the process for those who want to switch between "temporary status streams" and "creating an open-work permit pathway" for Iranians to support themselves while in Canada.

"This will enable Iranians here temporarily to take advantage of various opportunities without the need to leave Canada and apply for a new permit from outside the country," Wilkinson said.
Under the measures, he said eligible applications will also be processed on a "priority basis." For Canadians and permanent residents currently living in Iran who want to return to Canada, Wilkinson said they would be waiving fees for passports, permanent resident travel documents and citizenship certificates.

The announcement comes after anti-regime protests rocked the Islamic republic following the death of a 22-year-old woman last year while in custody of the so-called morality police. In January, Canada slapped new sanctions on the regime targeting "Iranian propaganda." The federal government said two Iranian officials and three entities are "complicit" in the "brutal repression of Iranian voices."

Canada has sanctioned more than 125 Iranian individuals and 186 Iranian entities, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the regime's security, intelligence and economic apparatus.
