Half a million people were killed and many more jailed in Indonesia’s anti-Communist purges during the 1960s under the regime of then-president Sukarno. The regime blamed Indonesia's Communist Party for a coup attempt, and embarked on a campaign of mass arrests, torture, and killings.
President Joko Widodo has recently acknowledged the atrocities, but victims and human rights campaigners say that can only be a first step in confronting the country's past.
