The cricket authorities in India, BCCI, said the decision was made "keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind".

Sky Sport Commentator Nick Knight said the nation was 'allowed to be a little bit distracted' from the crisis engulfing the country on a evening with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The suspension of the league comes after two games were called off following positive tests for coronavirus within the franchises and with just over half of the 60 matches planned completed.

The players who remain in India will see associations try to get them back to their countries including England's 11 players including Sam Curran, Jos Butler and Johnny Bairstow.
