Both fanfare and controversy surround a new Hindu temple in India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over the opening on Monday.

The site sits on the ruins of a former mosque – a political triumph for Modi as he seeks to elevate Hinduism in what has been a constitutionally secular state.

The temple is in Adodhya where Hindu mobs tore down a mosque three decades ago.
