Farmers celebrated in New Delhi on Monday after India’s parliament voted to repeal controversial farm laws that would have deregulated the agriculture industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi passed the contested agricultural reform laws in 2020 by executive order, sparking over a year of protests.
On Monday, both upper and lower chambers of India’s parliament passed a bill that withdrew the hotly contested law.
The protests against the controversial farm laws were the biggest challenge to Modi’s nationalist government since he came to power in 2014.
