Indianapolis shooting: Search for motive after 9 killed, including gunman, at FedEx facility | FULL

Authorities said on Friday that they were still working to identify the gunman and the motive behind a mass shooting spree that killed at least 8 people at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis, Ind. late Thursday night.

Deputy police chief Craig McCartt said that the gunman started randomly shooting at people in the parking lot of the facility after arriving in his vehicle before going into the building, where he eventually shot himself before police entered. The shooting took just a couple of minutes, McCartt said, and also left at least five people hospitalized. Another two people were treated and released at the scene.

"It did not last very long," McCartt said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said the shooting was a "devastating blow" to the community and the impact would last for weeks to come, but said the community was resilient and called on residents to rally together.

"The eyes on the nation are on Indianapolis today in ways that we would never have hoped for," he said. "We must guard against resignation or even despair."
