Officials provided an update on Thursday regarding an industrial fire that broke out in a recycling facility, with mounds of plastic, in Richmond, Ind., on Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m happy to say that we have at 90 per cent - maybe a little more - out. And we’re hoping to have the fire close to 98, 99 per cent out sometime this evening. And if not, tomorrow morning,” Richmond Fire Department Chief Tim Brown said.

Richmond Mayor Dave Snow also added that there was a second minor firefighter injury last evening, who was overcome by heat and treated on the scene.

Previously, officials said the blaze and toxic smoke are expected to burn for a few days. A half-mile radius around the facility, home to about 2,000 people, was evacuated as a thick, black column of smoke rose from the site.
