India produces nearly half of the world’s rice but has placed a four-month ban on the export of non-basmati varieties to ensure local supply.
The government made the announcement after prices rose by nearly 12 percent in the past year.
Extreme weather events and the war in Ukraine have triggered soaring global food prices.
