Indian residents celebrated the holiday of Diwali on Friday and Saturday as the festival, which lasts five days, got underway in the country, but with some celebrations upended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

India's Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab was lit up for the festival, which honours the victory of light over darkness.

In New Delhi, people took to markets to purchase items to exchange with friends or family as part of the holiday tradition, while others opted to stay home due to COVID-19. In Mumbai, people set off ground-based fireworks near their homes as opposed to venturing out.
