The Canadian government is adjusting its diplomatic staff presence in India, and New Delhi is halting visa services in Canada as a spat over the murder of a Canadian Sikh activist deepens.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dropped a bombshell Monday in the House of Commons when he cited “credible” intelligence that agents of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government may be linked to the killing of 45-year-old Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Meanwhile, Canada needs to examine its "growing reputation as a safe haven for terrorists," a spokesperson for India's foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Speaking in New Delhi, Arindam Bagchi said that India's High Commission and consulates in Canada were unable to review visa applications due to security threats, adding that the situation will be reviewed on a regular basis.
