India is the third country to report half a million deaths related to COVID-19 after the United States and Brazil.
Many deaths happened mid-last year during a surge driven by the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
Although some states are reporting higher infection numbers now from the Omicron variant, hospital admissions and deaths have remained relatively low.
