A dust storm in southern Illinois caused a massive pileup on Interstate 55 leading to “multiple fatalities” on Monday, police said.
Approximately 40 to 60 cars and several tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, including two that caused a fire, according to authorities.
“Nothing in my 24-year career that I can recall having something as severe as this,” said Maj. Ryan Starrick of the Illinois State Police, as he provided details about the police response to the crash.
Starrick said the conditions had to be “just right” to create the dangerous “brown out” in Illinois that led to the crashes.
