Illegal destruction in Colombia: Amazon rainforest under threat

Deforestation and fires in Colombia's Amazon are destroying hundreds of thousands of hectares of rainforest every year to make space for cattle ranching, mining and drug trafficking.
President Ivan Duque pledged to cut deforestation in half by the end of his term in August and a military anti-deforestation initiative and new laws are starting to offer a glimmer of hope.
The first few years of the operation were problematic because the military went after impoverished loggers and not their masterminds, but in recent months, two local mayors and a significant land-grabber were arrested.
