The fight against deforestation in Latin America has been going on for years.
Governments have long given orders to security forces to go after illegal miners and loggers who cut down trees.

Environment minister Susana Muhammad told Al Jazeera that combating the illegal logging industry and working with local communities are priorities for Colombia’s first left wing president Gustavo Petro.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo reports from the southern region of Guaviare.
