Icelandic Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said on Saturday that her country stands in support of the residents of the fishing town of Grindavik as concerns grow about an imminent volcanic eruption that could affect the area.

Last weekend, seismic activity and underground lava flows intensified on the Reykjanes peninsula near the capital Reykjavik, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 4,000 people from Grindavik. Search and rescue teams have been combing through the deserted town, collecting belongings and inspecting damaged buildings.

Large cracks in the earth could be seen running through Grindavik's town centre, leaving its main street impassable. The ground in some places has sunk by more than a metre, and video footage showed cracks in several buildings.

"To see the big cracks everywhere and all the houses are ruined, it's very sad, because I'm born and raised there," said Gudmundur Thorlaugarson, a resident of Grindavik. "It's a very unreal situation."
