An extreme marathon runner from the U.K. finished his near-year-long goal of running the entire length of Africa on Sunday.

On the final leg of his 352-day run, 27-year-old Russ Cook was joined by dozens of supporters to celebrate the end of a more than 16-thousand-kilometer trek across 16 countries.

Cook’s journey kicked off on April 22, 2023 from South Africa and concluded in Tunisia. His efforts raised roughly $1.1 million for multiple charities.

Asked whether he thought he might quit the marathon at any point, Cook recalled his “scariest moment” in Congo, thinking he was “about to die” and wanting to call it off just for a moment, before realizing he “couldn’t.”

“There's obviously been a bunch of times where it was very difficult: Sahara Desert, sandstorms, and pushing that mileage up for the last couple of months was really tough as well but I was never going to quit,” Cook reaffirmed.
