More than a thousand people demonstrated in central Rome on Friday against the use of a "Green Pass" made mandatory by the government for all workers in the country.

Protesters gathered in the ancient arena of Circus Maximus, shouting slogans and denouncing the introduction of the measure, which they say limits their civil rights.

"They damage our freedom, I want to be the one who decides," said protester Luciana Conti.

Many Italian port workers in Genoa and Trieste also gathered to protest the health passes, but those staff who wished to enter and work were allowed to do so.

The rule - one of the world's strictest anti-COVID measures - was approved by the Italian government in September, making it obligatory from Oct. 15 for all workers to either show proof of vaccination, a negative test or recent recovery from infection.

Under the rule, effective until year-end, workers without the "Green Pass" will be suspended without pay and face a fine of up to 1,500 euros if they try to work.
