The Greater Toronto Area is still not done with seeing car owners' catalytic converters being stolen as they're in for repairs, with Kevin Brandt being the latest victim while his vehicle was at a Brantford Hyundai recently.

Two days after it arrived, the dealership contacted Brandt to let him know that his catalytic converter had been stolen. The dealer then went on to tell Brandt to go through his insurance company over the theft to pay a deductible. The dealer principal in Brantford said they believed a claim would not increase an insurance premium, but Brandt raised questions after seeing a Global News story on a similar situation.

Consumer SOS reported on another Hyundai dealer in Orangeville, Ont. that refused to pay the cost to repair a customer's car when her vehicle had its converter stolen. The report eventually led to Hyundai itself stepping in and paying for the repairs, adding that when a vehicle is on the dealership's property, "they have an obligation to take care of the vehicle."

As Sean O'Shea reports, Brandt's story led to a good result — but it serves as yet another warning of the risks in leaving a vehicle on a dealership's lot.
