Hurricane Ian hit western Cuba on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction, bringing down trees, and cutting power to hundreds of thousands of people as the Category 3 storm trekked across the island with maximum sustained winds of 200 kilometres per hour.

Floridians were being warned as the projected path shows the hurricane is expected to directly hit the state of Florida, with the U.S. National Hurricane Center warning it could reach Category 4 strength by the time it makes landfall. Such a storm could bring wind speeds of up to 225 kilometres per hour, with Tampa and St. Petersburg, Fla. facing their first direct hit by a major hurricane since 1921.

Residents have begun to prepare, loading sandbags and boarding up windows as Gov. Ron DeSantis urged residents to heed evacuation warnings, with "catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge" expected.
