Acting director of the National Hurricane Center Jamie Rhome said Wednesday that Georgia and South Carolina should be prepared for the possibility of storm surge after hurricane Ian passes over Florida. He said that the storm would weaken as it crosses, then turn north towards the two southeastern U.S. states.

He also advised people in parts of Florida that could be most impacted should prepare to stay indoors for several days, warning venturing out too soon could put people's lives at risk from flooding or downed power lines.

Rhome also said that people in parts of Florida that could see the most direct impact from hurricane Ian, such as Tampa and the "I-4 corridor", referencing areas served by Interstate 4, should no longer travel outside for shelter due to "potentially devastating" winds that could hit. He said people should shelter indoors and plan to be there for some time as going outside could be life-threatening.
