Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis along with emergency officials provided an update Wednesday on Hurricane Idalia, saying the eye of the storm has passed Florida but that some outer bands were still affecting northern parts of the state. DeSantis also noted that there have been no confirmed casualties as a result of the weather event.

"There have been unconfirmed reports of traffic fatalities - and that may be storm-related and it maybe not. Obviously, it was happening in the time that the storm was either approaching or was on target in various parts of the state of Florida," DeSantis added.

As of 11 a.m. Eastern, the centre of Idalia was reported by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) as crossing into southern Georgia, and that high water levels continue along the gulf coast of Florida.

Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane around 7:45 a.m. Eastern at Keaton Beach, an ocean-front community of 13,000 people in Taylor County, roughly 121 kilometres southeast of the state capital Tallahassee.

It has weakened since making landfall, and was considered a Category 1 hurricane as of 11:30 a.m. Eastern.
