U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday that early reports suggest hurricane Ian, downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall in Florida, has caused “substantial loss of life.”

He said the storm “could be the deadliest” in the state’s history.

The president also announced that he has approved Florida’s request for a major disaster declaration. As a result, he said, the federal government will cover 100 per cent of the cost to clear debris and any costs incurred in the effort to “save lives.”

Over 1,000 personnel with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have been dispatched to Florida to aid in recovery efforts, along with other necessary supplies. Thousands of national guard members have also been activated, he said.

Biden also said he remains “committed” to the recovery of Puerto Rico after Ian tore through the island. We will “stand by you for however long it takes to get it done,” he said.
