Hundreds of Hondurans rushed to evacuate from flood-ravaged areas on Friday after Storm Eta pummelled Central America.

One of the fiercest storms to hit Central America in years, Eta struck Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane on Nov. 3, with winds of 150 miles per hour (241 kph) before weakening as it moved inland and into neighbouring Honduras.

On Friday, authorities reported the death toll from Eta in Central America has topped 100 and is expected to rise further.

In western Honduras high winds and heavy rain have damaged hundreds, if not thousands, of homes, forcing people to take cover in shelters.

After losing more strength over Central America, Eta is forecast to return to the sea and regain momentum as a tropical storm, charting a course to Cuba and southern Florida this weekend, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said.
