Hundreds of supporters of Russian opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny were detained on Tuesday night during protests after he was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

Supporters had also been detained earlier in the day when they tried to gather near the court before the ruling. Navalny's lawyer says he would actually serve two years and eight months due to time already spent under house arrest. They are appealing the sentence.

According to reports, police detained more than 900 people at protests on Tuesday.
