The Italian city of Naples was woken up by a huge explosion this morning, which has caused significant damage to the Ponticelli Hospital of the Sea.
An investigation is already underway into the cause of the blast, which created a 2,000 square meter opening in the ground, and is around 20 meters deep.
At first it was thought to have been some kind of bomb explosion, but emergency services soon determined it was a collapse from underneath the ground. Problems with the water and sewage services are suspected of being the origin of the sinkhole.
Several cars were swallowed into the hole in the hospital car park, but fortunately they were all empty.
There have been no reports of injuries or deaths so far. The hospital has been evacuated and its coronavirus treatment center will be temporarily closed.
