The Syrian government turns to a faithful ally for aid after the earthquake disaster. Russia is a key backer of Syrian leader Assad who is still under international sanctions.
International aid has begun to reach Syria after the earthquake caused major damage to roads in and out of the country.
But many are uneasy about working with Syria's government led by President Bashar al-Assad due to his role in the country's civil war. Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to Assad, and promised assistance.
