Ontario is the first major jurisdiction in Canada to institute a "right to disconnect" law and it kicked in last week, giving workers the ability to disconnect from the workplace after hours.

The law defines disconnecting as "not engaging in work-related communications, including emails, phone calls, video calls or sending or reviewing other messages." Effectively, the purpose is to be "free from the performance of work."

But as Anne Gaviola explains, the new law doesn't actually require employers to guarantee that workers have the right to disconnect.
