US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Sudan's warring parties have agreed to observe a 72-hour ceasefire that took effect at midnight local time.
Previous truce efforts have failed, but Blinken said the United States is urging both sides to comply with the agreement.
Food and water supplies in and around the capital Khartoum are running low.
And fighting between the army and paramilitary forces is spreading through residential areas.
