Chancellor Angela Merkel will be stepping down after a new government is formed, following 16 years in power.

Over that time, she's often been referred to as the most powerful woman in the world, having overseen numerous global crises. Now, Germany's closely fought election will set the direction of the European Union after 16 years under Merkel, whose party is scrambling to avoid defeat by its centre-left rivals after a rollercoaster campaign.
