Conservative MP Michael Chong started question period in the House of Commons on Thursday by denying that he had known about potential threats to his family made by China’s government two years ago. Rather, he said that a briefing he received in June 2021 was general in nature and demanded that the prime minister correct the record to “stop the spread of this misinformation.”

Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino responded by pledging continued support and adding that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly summoned the Chinese ambassador earlier today.

Responding to jeers that were interrupting Mendicino, House Speaker Anthony Rota called for order and scolded the Conservative MPs, saying “You do not respect the chair, the chair will not recognize you while you’re in this house.” Rota added that this may last “indefinitely” until the vocal members apologized.

Conservative MP Mark Strahl later demanded that the prime minister “get up and apologize for these Liberal MPs spreading these outright lies” to applause from Conservative members. After refusing to withdraw his statement, Rota said that Strahl will not be recognized until he withdraws and that “we’re not going to have many people left to ask questions.”
