India's space agency successfully launched a rocket on Friday that will attempt the first-ever landing of a lander and rover at the moon’s lunar south pole — an accomplishment that would massively advance India's position as a major space power.

Footage of the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) launch captured the LVM3 rocket blasting off from the nation’s main spaceport in Andhra Pradesh.

Only the U.S., China and the former Soviet Union have ever touched down a lander on the surface of the moon.

If all goes to plan with Chandrayaan-3 mission, India’s lander and rover will arrive at the lunar south pole on August 23. In their prior, 2019 mission, both a lander and rover were destroyed in a crash.

Following Friday’s launch, deputy minister of state for Indian science and technology Jitendra Singh said it was a “moment of glory for India.”

“I think a moment of destiny (too) … we are part of the history in making,” he added.
