Hindus mark Rang Panchami festival in central India with colours, music, dance

Thousands of people gathered in Bhopal and Ujjain, India on Sunday to celebrate the Hindu festival of "Rang Panchami."

Rang Panchami is an extension of the Hindu festival, Holi, which heralds the arrival of spring.

Revellers crowded the streets, danced and covered each other in coloured water and powder as they took part in processions and festivities.

"This festival of Rang Panchami is celebrated with much pomp and fervour. It is being celebrated for ages and in the old Bhopal area and different groups living in different residential areas come together and play with colours, water, and balloons," said a local.

In Ujjain, a special prayer ceremony was held at Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple and colour was offered to the Hindu god of destruction, Shiva, before devotees and priests daubed in colours on the occasion.
