India’s official death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is nearly half a million, second only to the United States. Many fear the actual figure is much higher. At the beginning of the year the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed it had defeated the virus. Shazia Ilmi, national spokesperson from Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP, joined Tim Sebastian from New Delhi to address the government’s handling of the pandemic as well as its clampdown on journalists and human rights activists.
