On Monday evening, millions of Muslim pilgrims gathered in the city of Arafat, Saudi Arabia to celebrate Arafa, the most important day of the hajj pilgrimage.
Every June 27, pilgrims gather at sunrise at the rocky Mount of Mercy to pray together, where it is believed that the Prophet Mohammad delivered his final sermon nearly 1,400 years ago.
The hajj is regarded as a once-in-a-lifetime duty for every Muslim who is both able and can afford to attend. Pilgrims stay in Arafet until sunset, then travel to the Muzdalifa plain near Mecca, where pebbles are gathered and thrown at stone columns — which is meant to represent the devil.
The ritual stoning marks the first day of Eid al-Adha — or the feast of sacrifice — and is celebrated internationally on June 28.
