Gunmen have kidnapped hundreds of schoolboys from a school in central Nigeria – shooting one of the children dead during the horrific raid.
Heavily armed ‘bandits’ dressed in military uniforms stormed into the all-boys Government Science College (GSC) in Kagara Town, Niger State, on Tuesday night.
‘Bandits went into GSC Kagara last night and kidnapped hundreds of students and their teachers,’ a government official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Some of the children were able to escape, but one was killed in the kidnap operation, AP reports. Army and air force patrols are scouring the region in search of the missing.
Video footage shows kidnappers brandishing AK-47s and a rocket launcher in front of the children, who can be heard wailing as the men yell ‘Allahu Akbar’ and fire shots into the air.
No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, but it comes just two months after Islamist terrorist faction Boko Haram kidnapped more than 300 boys from a boarding school in Katsina State. The boys were later released, while the government denied widespread reports that the terrorists were paid a ransom.
