Greece became the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex civil marriage on Thursday, despite opposition from the influential, socially conservative Greek Church. The bill gives same-sex couples the right to wed and adopt children, and was widely seen as a landmark victory for supporters of LGBTQIA2S+ rights.

Coming after decades of campaigning for marriage equality in the socially conservative country, the bill was approved by 176 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament and will become law when it’s published in the official government gazette.

“Today is a brand new day for us. Of course, it doesn’t change the substance of our family, our family was there and will be there, but it’s very important that now we are visible,” 42-year-old Yolanda Kalantzi said.

However, some Greeks expressed mixed feelings after the vote by parliament paved the way for same-sex civil marriage. Dimitris Loufopoulos, 46, said that, “Everyone can do what they want in their personal life, but I believe it is not appropriate.”
