It was a G7 Summit, unlike any other. While the to-do list for the Summit in Hiroshima, Japan was long, Ukraine’s defence against Russia’s invasion was at the top of the priority list. And while many leaders of the world’s democracies are in agreement on helping Ukraine, there are still many other issues that there is disagreement on. Mackenzie Gray reports.
During Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Japan, Russia came out claiming the longest battle of the war was over. After months of fierce fighting, the Kremlin says Russian-backed forces have taken full control of the Eastern-Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. As Redmond Shannon reports, Zelenskyy appeared to confirm the victory only to roll back on it later on.
There’s relief in the forecast for the hundreds of firefighters trying to extinguish the flames in Northern Alberta. Rain and cooler temperatures are expected in the days to come. It’s been a tense few days in Fox Creek Alta., Northwest of Edmonton, where a wildfire has finally reached the town’s defences. Blake Lough reports.
Allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian democracy have dogged the prime minister for months. Justin Trudeau’s been resisting calls for a public inquiry into the matter. Instead, he’s appointed former David Johnston to decide whether an inquiry is necessary. As Global’s chief political correspondent David Akin explains, Johnston will make his recommendation public on Tuesday.
Affordable child care is an elusive dream for many Canadian parents. The federal government has promised to make it cheaper with a $10-a-day program but there’s another major hurdle – having enough facilities to meet the demand.
