Severe weather is sweeping across Canada and being felt by millions of Canadians from coast to coast. As significant winter weather settles in, there are warnings about dangerously cold temperatures and snowstorms in every province and territory. Anthony Farnell has the details.
In B.C., plunging temperatures turned parts of Vancouver into sheets of ice, with several buses sliding to a stop in the middle of streets on Thursday evening and causing commuter chaos. But as Neetu Garcha reports, the severe cold snap isn't only impacting B.C. — the cold is even more excruciating in the prairies.
In the Middle East, tensions are escalating beyond the crisis in Gaza after a series of joint British-American strikes on Houthi rebels late Thursday — in retaliation to the Iran-backed group's attacks on ships travelling in the Red Sea since November. According to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, missiles and aircraft struck 60 targets in 16 locations: a combination of Houthi air defence systems, logistical hubs, and facilities storing drones and weapons. As Jackson Proskow reports, the strikes possibly signal another concerning step to a wider conflict in the region — one that many had feared for months.
According to federal ministers, Canada played a small and supporting role in the Thursday attacks on the Houthis in Yemen. On Friday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada supported what he called the "precise targeted strikes" against the Houthis. But as David Akin reports, the Opposition NDP is worried Canada is supporting an escalation of military activity in a very volatile region.
The premise of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was challenged in the Hague on Friday, as Israel delivered its defence to the United Nation's (UN) highest court. Israel rejected the allegations of genocide, while accusing South Africa of "grossly distorting" the facts. Crystal Goomansingh reports.
From "deepfakes" to artificial intelligence, a flood of disinformation is hitting voters in Taiwan ahead of Saturday’s presidential election. Some researchers say Taiwan is more impacted by disinformation — from beyond its borders — than anywhere in the world, and it's overwhelmingly aimed at candidates opposed by China. Jeff Semple reports on how Taiwan is trying to crack down on a sophisticated campaign of misleading content.
An Austro-German heiress is setting up a citizens group to decide how she should give away much of the fortune she inherited from her grandmother. Marlene Engelhorn, who is 31 and lives in Vienna, wants 50 Austrians to determine how €25 million of her inheritance should be redistributed. Mike Drolet has more.
