Global National: July 10, 2024 | Canada to buy up to 12 conventional submarines for Arctic defence

While the NATO summit continues in Washington, D.C., the Trudeau government says it will buy up to 12 conventional submarines, as Russia and China's presence in the Arctic has raised concerns about their military ambitions. There is no timeline on when the submarines will be delivered, and no information of how much they might cost. But a senior government official says that it won't be enough to get Canada to the 2 per cent of GDP target. Mercedes Stephenson explains.

Plus, in the wake of a disastrous U.S. presidential debate performance, there are growing calls for President Joe Biden to pass the baton to a new generation of leaders, from Washington to Hollywood alike. A-list actor George Clooney, who is also a major Democratic donor, has been the latest to join those demanding Biden to drop out through a scathing op-ed, claiming he cannot win against Republican Donald Trump. So far, the American president has refused to give in. But senior members of his own party — including former speaker Nancy Pelosi — are now hinting that conversations could become more pointed once the NATO conference leaves the capitol. Jackson Proskow has more.

Parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan are under heat warnings again, while Eastern Canada is being hit by heavy rain from what remains of Hurricane Beryl. The rainfall caused localized flooding in Toronto, leading to a treacherous morning commute. For many, a delayed flight could mean some unwanted expenses, or even a ruined vacation. But for a pair of veteran NASA astronauts, it meant a few extra weeks in space. What was supposed to be a week-long trip to the International Space Station (ISS) for Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams has quickly stretched into over a month-long stay.
