Global National: Dec. 11, 2023 | Ottawa unveils expanded dental care program for uninsured Canadians

In tonight’s top story: The federal government has unveiled the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which will eventually help about nine million Canadians who do not have private dental insurance. Abigail Bimman reports on who's eligible, what will be covered, what won't be, the concerns from the dental industry and when the program will be available.

Also, a senior government source tells Global News the federal government is reviving a Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) program to provide standardized housing blueprints to builders. They share the details of the plan and how much time it could save in building homes.

Over in the Middle East, Israel's attack on Hamas has displaced 1.9 million people — most of Gaza's population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. Thousands have been pushed south, towards Egypt, and as Crystal Goomansingh reports, Israel is being accused of laying the groundwork for the mass expulsion of Gazans into Egypt.

While Israel's offensive continues, settler violence in the West Bank has doubled since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, according to a recent Human Rights Watch report. Global’s Daniele Hamamdjian visits Susiya, a small village in the West Bank surrounded by Israeli settlements, and speaks with Palestinians about how they believe Jewish settlers are using violence to drive them out.

Back in Canada, after only two months on the job, House of Commons Speaker Greg Fergus is facing calls to resign over a controversial video he made for John Fraser, the Ontario Liberal party's former interim leader. David Akin reports on what Fergus is accused of doing by opposition MPs, his apology and how the committee is now considering his future.
