Germany’s opposition leader Friedrich Merz saw an "extremely grateful" Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday but stressed the need for an ongoing support for Ukraine. In an interview with DW’s Michaela Küfner, the head of the German CDU party also called for an annual German Defense budget.

Asking about Israel’s military action in the Gaza strip, Merz underlined his trust in the Israeli government and said he would "never give public advice with the raised finger" to it.
