The situation at hospitals across Khan Younis is ‘catastrophic’ as they struggle to cope with the large number of people injured in the Israeli bombardment and the severe shortage of water and electricity, according to health officials.
The situation is catastrophic. For the last seven days, we have had a continuous flow of wounded civilian patients. The hospital’s bed [capacity] was expanded many times,” Dr. Mohamed Kandil, director of the emergency department at Naser Hospital, told Al Jazeera.
“In the last hour, we received 60 wounded civilian patients. That is one patient per minute. This is a very catastrophic situation,” he said.
“The hospital is working in its last hours. The electricity is still off. The hospital’s fuel-based generators will be off soon. All the health system will collapse. Without electricity, we will not be able to provide services to patients. The hospital will change to a graveyard. Now, there are many parts of the hospital that are without water, like the women’s section and the pediatric department,” he added.
