The Islamist militant group Hamas has freed two older women held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Their release comes amid reports that the US is advising Israel to delay an expected ground assault in Gaza to allow time to secure the release of additional hostages.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed to have struck more than 400 "Hamas terror targets" overnight into Tuesday in a post on Telegram. The IDF said their strikes killed "several Hamas commanders and numerous operatives preparing attacks." Separately, Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the EU, US, Israel and others, said on Tuesday that more than 140 people had been killed in airstrikes, according to the French news agency AFP. The Hamas-led Gaza Health Ministry says over 5,000 people have now been killed in the bombardment. Israel, in turn, says at least 222 people are still being held hostage by the militant Islamist group.
