Fierce fighting has engulfed Gaza's southern city of Khan Younis today, with gun battles in the streets and an intensive bombing campaign from the sky.

The Israeli Defence Forces say they have begun a new offensive to dismantle Hamas's military framework in the west of the city.

Palestinian authorities say Israeli troops have stormed one hospital and put another under siege.
