French President Emmanuel Macron appointed 34-year-old Education Minister Gabriel Attal as France’s next prime minister on Tuesday, hoping to give his government a reset ahead of Europe's parliamentary elections.

Attal is the country’s youngest and the first openly gay prime minister.

Parisians had mixed opinions about the appointment, with some welcoming the idea of a young prime minister, while others suggested his appointment would ultimately not make any changes in the way the government operates.

“No, it’s never too young. When it’s effective, it’s never too young,” said one young voter, Arthur Blot, about Attal’s age. “What’s scary is that he’s a mini-Macron and on that… watch out,” he added.

Attal, a close Macron ally became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic as a government spokesperson. He replaces outgoing prime minister Elisabeth Borne.
