Toronto Police officer Const. Jeffrey Northrup was remembered for his "unshakeable commitment" to his family and the city during a public funeral service held at BMO Field on Monday, just two weeks after he died in the line of duty.

His wife Margaret spoke about his love for his family and how he "loved to make people happy." She remembered him for "making people feel good even through their stomachs," in reference to Sunday breakfasts and brownies he made for others. Speaking to their children, she said their father would want them to live and experience "life to the fullest."

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer paid tribute to Northrup, saying he was dedicated to his family and community and "beloved by everyone." He spoke about how Northrup loved his job, but said knowing he died doing the job he loved "any less tragic." He added that as a police officer, officer Northrup showed up to every shift with enthusiasm.

Northrup died in the early hours of July 2, when he and his partner were dispatched to the parking garage of Toronto city hall for a call that was initially classified as a robbery but upgraded to a stabbing. There was an interaction involving a suspect when Northrup became injured. He was rushed to hospital but was subsequently pronounced dead. A 31-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in Northrup's death.
